October Opals Shimmer & Shine

Opals are truly one of the most unique gemstones on Earth. October’s gemstone is characterized by a one of a kind color-changing shimmer: it’s such an outstanding effect that the word opalescent was actually coined to describe it.

Part of the reason opals are unique is the fact they’re not hard minerals the way diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires are. Opals are softer stones, composed of silica deposits that collect deep within the earth in crevices caused by rainwater finding its way underground.

Legend has it that the first opals were formed when Zeus, king of the Olympian Gods, was forced to kill most of his older relations, the Titans, in battle. After his victory, Zeus cried for what he’d lost; those tears became opals. Ever since that time, opals have had a complex history: Eastern Europeans long held opals to be good luck. They felt wearing the stone enhanced one’s natural psychic abilities and could also protect one from horrible winter weather.

Flash forward to the Elizabethan era, and we find the opal associated with mysticism and witchcraft: many people shunned the stones, fearing they were bad luck. Ironically enough, many of the people who were most adamant about opals being bad news just happened to be in the diamond-selling business. We’re not making any accusations – but we’re also not so sure they would have hated opals quite so much if they’d been selling donuts instead of diamonds!

Today we know the opal to be an exquisitely beautiful gemstone. Because it is a softer stone, you’ll see opals featured more in pendants and earrings, rather than rings. Many of the world’s best opals come from Australia, and we’ve discovered from our customers that they’re truly addictive: if you have one piece of opal jewelry, there are better than good odds you’ll want another one!

Right now, there are some truly stunning opal designs in the Previously Enjoyed collection at our Orange County Jewelry Store. If you’re looking for a great gift for the October birthday girl or you want to get a jump start on your holiday shopping, now’s your chance!
