If you love blue gemstone jewelry, we have good news for you. There are three gorgeous gemstones traditionally used as December’s birthstone: Blue Zircon, Tanzanite, and Turquoise. We have lovely examples of each in our showcases at The Jewelry Box of Lake Forest right now.
Blue Zircon: We have a soft spot in our heart for blue zircon. These beautiful gems are often the victim of mistaken identity! Zircon is a natural gem that’s mined in Asia, particularly in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. It comes in a range of colors, including clear. Along the way, in the quest for an affordable diamond substitute, cubic zirconia was invented – not at all the same thing, really, but because the name is similar many people pass over blue zircon, assuming it’s a lesser stone. Their loss is your gain – blue zircon has a beautiful intense color, is durable enough to be worn every day, and legend has it wearing the stone makes you feel happier.
Tanzanite: Tanzanite is an amazing stone. While we don’t know who discovered most gemstones, we know exactly who discovered Tanzanite: Jumanne Mhero Ngoma. Tanzanite first appears as a brown stone that isn’t all that impressive. A wildfire in the area exposed many of these brown stones to heat and they underwent an amazing transformation into radiant blue gems with a beauty that rivals sapphires. The really nice thing about tanzanite is that it’s a high quality stone with a realistic price tag – especially if you find it in our Previously Enjoyed Collection.
Turquoise: Turquoise is a favorite gemstone here in Orange County. Often set in sterling silver, turquoise has a lush, compelling tactile quality: you just want to touch it and feel the stone’s smoothness against your fingertips. If you love traditional and Native American jewelry design, turquoise is for you. There are also some artists creating simply stunning modern looks with turquoise – look for David Yurman pieces if this sounds like your style!
